Business Calls for Higher Tech Skills

By Heidi

"The first rule of any technology used in a business is that automation applied to an efficient operation will magnify the efficiency. The second is that automation applied to an inefficient operation will magnify the inefficiency."

--Bill Gates

Technology skills in the field of business is being much more essential than ever before.  To ensure that business is done most effectively and efficiently as possible, workers must use all the resources available to them.  The biggest resource that saves time is technology.  It’s also very important to be able to fix anything that goes wrong with any form of technology being used in the workforce.  Of course, most companies nowadays have IT people that can help with problems that have to do with technology.  Unfortunately, there will be times when the IT guy could be unreachable, in which case employees of a company would have to fix the technology problem on their own.  If there’s no common knowledge among workers, this would be impossible.

Many entrepreneurs lack the technology skills and understanding that is important to owning a business. Justin Kan of Justin.tv came across this problem when their developer was out of town on vacation, and the startup sight was down. They were forced to get him a message via a pizza delivery guy, which is less than ideal. Although, this story is somewhat an extreme, small problems like this are faced by many companies on a daily basis. Problems like this cause stalls in working, that could potentially lose money, or clients. Similarly to Michigan State University, college students getting a business degree of any sort, should be required to take a class that requires them to gain technology skills. Michigan State requires CSE 101 as a prerequisite to be accepted into the Broad College of Business. This course mainly deals with excel, giving students a general understanding of technology, computers, and problem solving.

  1. I agree that every college student going into business should have technology skills. However, I think that everybody in todays work world needs to have some type of idea on how technology works.
